Spirits Go Blah is a performing arts company/collective dedicated to developing the work of composer/playwright César Alvarez and visual artist Emily Orling.
Emily and César’s body of work includes six large-scale musicals in addition to gallery exhibitions, films, albums and smaller performances that all exist as a single collaborative ecosystem. The six musicals core to the project are egg, The Elementary Spacetime Show, The Universe is a Small Hat, The Potluck, Painting Mary, and NOISE
All six of these works represent a lifelong commitment on the part of César and Emily to making art in the form of large scale ritual togetherness. Each work is a site for collective transformation, inter-dimensional consciousness, and non-normative visions of kinship. Each work wrestles with questions of community, Utopic practice, family-ing, spiritual recovery and alchemizing shame. The works shine light on teen suicidality, state sanctioned white supremacy, queer parenthood, trans-epistemologies, and seek to generate shared practices of hope inside of, and around, the ruins of late capitalism.
Spirits Go Blah is an incubator within which all of this work will gestate, a vehicle for moving each of the works through its unique development and a shelter for the community of artists who comprise the creative family of the work. The purpose of Spirits Go Blah is to build a organizational architecture, which can provide each of these unusual large scale performances, and the smaller works in their orbit, with production support, fundraising and values-driven infrastructure to allow for their unique flourishing.
Emily and César are based in Western Massachussetts.
